One of the best Northern Ontario chocolatiers is Chef Maki. A proud Nakota Sioux/Saulteaux Ojibwe kwe from White Bear First Nation in Saskatchewan she now runs a chocolate shop, Raven Rising – Global Indigenous Chocolates, in downtown Sudbury.

Chef Maki is a Certified Red Seal Journeyman Pastry Chef and Baker who crafts the most beautiful chocolates. Both in her shop and online, you’ll find hand-painted chocolate bars and truffles.

In addition to unique designs, Chef Maki also masterfully weaves her Indigenous story into her chocolates. Each box of truffles features a couple that highlight a particular Indigenous ingredient.

Ingredients are sourced from Indigenous people and their businesses. Plus, she strives to use ethical, organic and Fair-Trade ingredients.

We were blown away by the beauty of each creation. Each piece is literally edible art. However, some pieces are too special to eat, like the one of her pup that she has on display.

Along with having a range of chocolates available both in store and online, Raven Rising offers a Chocolate Memberships. Memberships are available for 3 or 6 months and have various price points.

Beyond being an incredible local business to support, it’s woman and Indigenous owned. Plus, Chef Maki donates a portion of the proceeds to various organizations that support Indigenous communities. These include Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Residential School organizations.
