The Cannon, One of the Top Coffee Shops in Hamilton

The Cannon Coffee Co

For eleven years and counting, The Cannon Coffee Co has served up local artisan coffee to all who visit. They just recently moved to a new location – right across the street from their old spot! The Cannon now has a larger space so more folks can enjoy their amazing coffee, lattes flavoured with their in-house syrups, and indulge in their incredible waffle dishes. For those with dietary restrictions, there are both vegan and gluten-free options on the menu! Grab a bite or just a cup of joe and settle into one of their tables and bask in the natural light that filters in through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Cup at Durand Coffee in Hamilton
They Make a Mean Chai at Durand Coffee

Durand Coffee

With its mission being to serve quality coffee to the neighbourhood it’s named after, Durand Coffee is certainly knocking it out of the park. This coffee shop has been a hub for the Durand community for seven years and counting! On the menu, you’ll find a plethora of espresso-based beverages, both filtered and handmade coffee, tea as well as cold drinks. They also have a selection of adult beverages if you’re looking for that sort of thing instead of a caffeine boost! Durand Coffee also has a selection of incredibly tasty pastries that are the perfect snack to go with your drink of choice. Make sure to check out their seasonal offerings as they’re some of the most creative in the city which is why this makes Durand one of the best coffee shops in Hamilton!

Come Christmas time, be sure to keep an eye on their social media channels as they offer a coffee advent calendar. How cool is that?!

Drink to Go at Emerald Coffee
Grab and go from Emerald Coffee Co

Emerald Coffee Co

Located directly on busy Barton Street, Emerald Coffee Co is easily one of my favourite coffee shops in Hamilton. They proudly source some of the finest coffees Canadian roasters have to offer with a number of them being from Ontario. Similar to Durand, Emerald Coffee Co’s seasonal beverage game is on point. You have to try gems such as their teddy graham latte or their Halloween vampire kiss: pumpkin Spice Blume powder, raspberry syrup, oat milk, and whip cream. They also have an assortment of muffins and other baked goods made fresh daily, though their breakfast sandwiches are where it’s at like their Hamiltonian with homemade sausage, cheese, egg, hashbrowns and maple mayo!

Mulberry Coffeehouse

What was once the Armory Hotel is now home to the Mulberry Coffeehouse, an eclectic Hamilton cafe that is known for its exceptional live music. The building dates back to 1887 and still has elements of its previous life like the original plaster ceiling medallions as well as the original inlaid tile work on the floor of the cafe. It began serving top-notch coffee in 2010 and each bean is Certified Organic, Certified Bird Friendly and Fair Trade Coffee. Every cup of coffee they sell helps to protect valuable bird habitats in Latin America as well as sustain a high quality of life for coffee farmers! Mulberry Coffeehouse also serves up sandwiches, baked goods and shareable items. Everything is prepared in-house using ingredients that are local and organic whenever possible. There’s something for everyone with both vegan and no gluten-added options available!

Munchies Coffee House & Barkery

Did you know that Hamiton is home to Canada’s first dog cafe? I bet you didn’t and Munchies is certainly canine-friendly! Bring your pups for some social time as you sip on amazing caffeinated beverages like their maple spice mocha, peanut butter latte or a Bombay fog (like a London fog but with Chai instead of Earl Grey tea). They also make some incredible Belgian waffles which are not to be missed. Satisfy your sweet tooth or opt for one of their savoury options. They even have an eggs benedict version which you bet I indulged in and it was incredible! The quality of their beverages as well as their food makes Munchies one of the best cafes in Hamilton. Oh, and don’t forget to spoil Fido with some of their homemade dog treats too!

Cup and Mural at Phin Coffee Bar
How Adorable is the Mural at Phin Coffee Bar?!

Phin Coffee Bar

This delightful Hamilton cafe is located in the Westdale neighbourhood. With super homey vibes and an adorable mural inside, Phin Coffee Bar is a multi-roaster likes to try new things in the pursuit of crafting the perfect cup of coffee. All of their syrups are made in-house with flavours like vanilla, salted caramel and rose hibiscus. However, my personal favourite is their “spice world” which has the sweet meets spice of gingerbread but better! Be sure to check out their repertoire of coffee beans as they easily have one of the most international selections in the city with coffee sourced from roasters in Denmark, the United Kingdom, the United States and more!

Cup at Redchurch Cafe in Hamilton
Cup at Redchurch Cafe in Hamilton

Redchurch Cafe & Gallery

Named after a tiny street in East London’s Shoreditch neighbourhood where the owners lived years ago in the United Kingdom, it’s an ode to where their love of coffee and art began. They exclusively serve Toronto-based De Mello Coffee which sources their beans ethically and sustainably while working with producers to secure economic security while also bringing to light the issues they face. They have a variety of both caffeinated and decaf beverages as well as seasonal offerings. I highly recommend their butterfly blue pea flower and maple matcha latte as it is unique to Redchurch! They also have some handheld heats if you’re feeling peckish along with craft beer, wine and Processo if you’d like something a little stronger. Don’t forget to pop by the art gallery located at the back of the shop!

Smalls Coffee in Hamilton
Outside Smalls Coffee in Hamilton

Smalls Coffee

The name may give it away but this is the tiniest coffee shop in Hamilton – and possibly the entire province! They have a small, straightforward menu with a variety of milk alternatives to cater to everyone. Their almond-coconut mix is delightful and the Sam James butter knife espresso beans are very popular. This is definitely a pop-in, grab your cup and go for a stroll situation as there’s no seating, just coffee paraphernalia and your baristas with their equipment! You may return as you finish your cup though because the coffee is that good. It’s also located beside The Burnt Tongue, one of the fantastic restaurants in Hamilton. Coffee and soup make a great combo so you may want to pop by while you’re there!

Synonym Cafe in Hamilton
Inside Synonym on James

Synonym

Synonym is a specialty coffee espresso bar with a concise menu featuring your typical caffeinated beverages. They do have a few signature items unique to their shop such as their salted honey cappuccino, espresso tonic and vanilla raf. If you’ve never heard of a raf before (I hadn’t either before visiting), it’s prepared by adding cream and vanilla sugar to a shot of espresso and then foaming the mixture to make a delicious but not overly sweet latte! Synonym also has a number of amazing Mediterranean dishes that are sure to satisfy if hunger strikes during your visit. Plus, every month the decor changes as they feature a new artist. If you’re a practicing artist yourself, reach out and they just might hang your work!

About the author

The name's Lindsay and I'm the gal behind I've Been Bit! Born and raised here in Niagara, it's been a treat to get reacquainted with the area through my love of food. While I'm always a fan of a unique latte or eggs benedict, I'm definitely the lush of ELO. It's not uncommon to see me with a beer or cider in hand while enjoying a meal! Don't worry, I always enjoy responsibly as I seek out the most unique eats on the menu.
